Minimize scratches in your hardwood floor.

More than a few years ago I bought my first – and only – brand new car. I went to great lengths to avoid scratches and dings. I got a lot of exercise walking from the back forty of the parking lot to go shopping.

You might feel the same way about your new hardwood floor.  So here are a few tips that will help:

  • Use felt floor protectors on all furniture and anything else that will be sitting on the floor. I don't recommend the harder protectors that may slide well but if sand or grit gets between the floor and the protector, scratches will result  .  .  .

  • Place area rugs in strategic locations like entry ways.
  • When you move a piece of furniture, pick it up and set it down as opposed to pushing it across the floor.
  • Dogs are probably the leading cause of scratches in hardwood floors. If you have a dog, file their nails on a regular basis. One of the best tools for doing this is the Dremel, model 7300-PT, 4.8 volt pet nail grooming tool. If you take your dog for a walk daily – or almost daily – and you are walking on concrete sidewalks, the concrete will act as an abrasive and that might be enough to keep your dog's nails from being a problem. If you cut their nails, be sure to file them afterward to get rid of sharp edges.
  • Keep your floors clean. Sand, dirt and grit can scratch the floor as they get ground into the finish. Use a good cleaner like BONA. Do not use polish!
  • Not wearing shoes in the house is one of the best things you can do to protect your floor. This is not for everyone, especially if you have kids. I have had customers that required all visitors to remove their shoes before entering. It's great for the floors but may not endear you to friends and neighbors!

Lastly, don't stress too much! Most scratches are in the finish and not in the wood. Like a car, you will not notice scratches so much when the new wears off. And ultimately - unlike a car – you can restore your hardwood floor to brand new condition with a refinish.
